Berthing & Pilotage

Arrival
information

Ocean Village Marina is Gibraltar’s sheltered “gateway to the Mediterranean”, offering 24/7 berthing support from the centrally located Pier Office and an ideal base within easy reach of Gibraltar town centre and Gibraltar International Airport. For arrivals, skippers should call ahead on VHF Channel 71 to confirm berth allocation and approach instructions, then proceed for assistance with berthing on arrival.

Pilotage in Gibraltar is managed under the Gibraltar Port Authority. Pilotage is compulsory on arrival and for berthing, unberthing and shifting anchorage (with specific provisions for vessels at anchor), and pilots normally board 1.25 miles south-west of Europa Point. Requirements can vary by vessel and operation, so captains, agents, and masters should confirm pilotage arrangements in advance with the relevant port/marina contacts.

Directions and access

Ocean Village Marina (Gibraltar) sits inside Gibraltar Harbour, adjacent to Marina Bay and within easy reach of Gibraltar town centre and Gibraltar International Airport.

Arrival instructions (by sea)

  • Contact the Pier Office on VHF Channel 71 prior to arrival for berth allocation and local instructions.
  • Proceed directly to a commercial marina unless directed otherwise by the Captain of the Port.
  • Observe marina manoeuvring rules and speed restrictions (marina terms reference a 3-knot limit in or near the marina).

Position, charts and “chart extracts”

  • Published marina position: 36°8’5”N, 5°22’5”W.
  • Use up-to-date official charts/ECDIS updates and relevant Notices to Mariners for Gibraltar Harbour and the Strait of Gibraltar. (For licensing/copyright reasons, chart extracts are not reproduced here.)

Bathymetry (depth guidance)

  • Published depth: 4.5m (maximum depth stated for Ocean Village and Marina Bay).
  • Depth can vary by berth and conditions; confirm draft clearance with the Pier Office when requesting a berth.

Flag protocol (port entry)

  • Gibraltar Port Rules require vessels entering port to:
  • Hoist national colours (from 08:00 to sundown), and
  • Display the International Code “Q” flag until pratique has been granted.

Deliveries (courier, spares, chandlery, stores)

  • Plan deliveries with the Pier Office/marina reception in advance (yacht name, berth, contact, ETA).
  • Goods intended for Gibraltar must be declared on arrival, and authorities may verify declarations on-site.
  • For duty-free handling on non-Gibraltar registered vessels, see “Import duty & duty-free” below.

Customs & Immigration,
Import Duty, Schengen Status

Customs and immigration (arriving by yacht)

  • Yachts coming alongside in Gibraltar require clearance by the Port Authority, HM Customs, and Immigration (Borders and Coastguard Agency)—usually via an agent; for many marina yachts, clearance is handled via the marina operator.
  • The Pier Master office provides access to the HM Customs ASYCUDA electronic system for skipper completion, and visiting yachts can use the ASYCUDA pre-arrival declaration via Gibraltar HM Customs guidance.
  • Gibraltar Port Rules include electronic submission requirements for yacht crew, passenger and store declarations to the Captain of the Port.

Import duty and duty-free (yachts)

  • All goods for non-Gibraltar registered vessels must be imported via a Customs clearing agent or ship’s chandlers to qualify for duty-free status.
  • Gibraltar-registered vessels under 500 tonnes attract duty (as described in the same guidance).

Schengen status (important for crew/guests and onward travel)

  • Gibraltar is not part of the Schengen area, and the Gibraltar–Spain land frontier is described as an external Schengen border (checks/delays may occur).
  • Separately, UK Parliamentary briefing on the June 2025 political agreement states Gibraltar will not join Schengen under the agreement, while also noting how Schengen short-stay rules may be treated for some travellers.
  • Gibraltar Government communications on the future treaty arrangements indicate an intention for no routine immigration controls between Gibraltar and Spain / wider Schengen area (subject to the treaty arrangements).

Pre-arrival

Berth request checklist (recommended)

  • Provide the Pier Office (or your agent) with:
  • Yacht name + flag, LOA / beam / draft
  • ETA/ETD, port of last call and next port
  • Crew and passenger details (as applicable)
  • nsurance + registration documents
  • Service needs: shore power, water, waste, provisioning, technical support

Electricity, Water, Internet,
Wi-Fi and Fibre Connections

Utilities at berth (typical)

  • Fresh water and shore power are standard marina services; Ocean Village/Marina Bay facilities listings include fresh water, three-phase power and free Wi-Fi.
  • For longer stays, ask the Pier Office about metering, connector types, and any shore-power capacity constraints for larger vessels.
  • Internet (Wi-Fi and dedicated connections)
  • Wi-Fi broadband is commonly listed as an on-site marina facility.
  • Dedicated wired / fibre-grade connectivity (where required for yachts, yacht offices, or long-stay residents) should be arranged via the marina office/concierge, subject to local provider availability and lead times.

Residents Berthing

Ocean Village supports both visitor berthing and longer-term / annual berthing across Ocean Village and Marina Bay, with 24/7 support via the Pier Office.

Typical residents’ guidance (website-friendly):

  • Annual berthing is managed via licence/contract terms (payment periods, discounts, renewal dates)
  • Berth allocation is based on vessel specifications and availability
  • Marina rules apply for safety, noise, waste disposal and manoeuvring (including local speed limits)

House Boats

House boats and permanently berthed floating accommodation (where available) typically require prior approval and additional operational conditions, for example:

  • Utility metering and waste management arrangements
  • Fire safety and access control
  • Insurance and compliance documentation
  • Limitations on modifications and external equipment

Recommended website line:

“House boat enquiries are assessed case-by-case. Please contact the Pier Office with your full specifications and intended duration to confirm eligibility, availability and terms.”
